Post-stressing



Pulling on the reinforcing rods in a concrete beam after the concrete has set.

This puts a higher stress in the rods and a compressive stress in the concrete to avoid tension in the concrete when the bridge is loaded.

You are not likely to be able to tell by just looking whether or not this technique has been used, but you might see the forces being applied during construction. Usually the arrangements for applying post-tensioning are not visible once the span has been completed.
